About Brie Sutton, LGPC

Brie Sutton, Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology

"Silence doesn’t change the world. It changes us. It shrinks us. It takes our stories and feelings away from us and buries them alive. Unearth what is buried within you. Free yourself in this way.” -Cleo Wade

I am a cisgender, queer, African American woman who grew up in inner city Baltimore. I received my undergraduate degree from McDaniel College majoring in English and Psychology. I received my Master's at University of Baltimore’s Counseling Psychology program.  As someone who has experienced marginalization in many spaces: I know how it feels to not able to feel like you can be your authentic self, how it feels to not feel accepted and loved for who you are, and how it feels to not be able to live in your truth due to judgement from others.  BIPOC 2SLGBTQIA stands for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color who are Two Spirit, or LGBTQIA. My practice strives to bring all parts of your identity and experience into our work together.

My approach to therapy is person-centered in nature, which means that my main goal is to help each person to live a life that matches their authentic selves. I want to help each client unconditionally accept themselves with the use of empathy and understanding in the therapy session. I am not the expert on your story. You are the expert and I only seek to empower clients to share their stories and feel accepted during the therapy process.

BIPOC 2SLGBTQIA-(stands for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color who are Two Spirit, or LGBTQIA).

My experience lies in working with people of color who suffer from anxiety, depression, and traumatic experiences. There are not enough spaces for us to bring our whole selves. As a Black therapist, I want my clients to be able to be real when taking care of their mental health. Outside of the therapy room, I am most passionate about social justice and advocacy work. My advocacy includes LGBTQ+ , racial, and gender issues.

Couples Counseling

I recently completed Level 1 Gottman Training to bring these communication skills into our work to improve your romantic relationship. Many of us did not learn these skills growing up and we can learn as adults how to decrease resentments and increase respect with our partner.

In my free time, I enjoy writing poetry and reading comic books.
