About Alex Walker, LGSW

BIPOC queer therapist offers a healing approach that connects the mind and body

ALEX WALKER, LGSW

“Pleasure activism is the work we do to reclaim our whole, happy, and satisfiable selves from the impacts, delusions, and limitations of oppression and/or supremacy.”
- adrienne maree brown

I believe that holistic healing begins with listening to our bodies, both the physical and the collective. We must learn to recognize the stories we tell ourselves and those we have yet to challenge. We must uncover what keeps us from understanding our innate power, pursuing pleasure, connecting to purpose, and living peacefully.

I am a cisgender, queer, African American woman from Michigan. I received my undergraduate degree in Exercise Science at Grand Valley State University. In 2016, I moved to Baltimore and earned my Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland. I love incorporating mindfulness techniques such as meditation or various breathing exercises into my practice. This coupled with my educational background provides me a unique perspective that allows me to assist my clients with improving overall wellbeing.

Healing the whole self is the operative theme of my therapeutic practice. I am committed to being alongside people of all ages, backgrounds, and identities in their journey towards thriving. I am extremely passionate about serving the LGBTQIA+ community and people of color. As a humxn at the intersection of various forms of oppression, I get excited about supporting other humxns on their path of authentic expression and an affirming life of pleasure.

My other therapy specialties and experiences include emotion regulation, challenging negative self-talk, management of stress, anxiety, and depression, and navigating generational trauma. I've loved my previous work with adolescents and adults as we work on these things together. In addition, I have experience working with youth with parents who are 2SLGBTQ+ identified people. We can process the unique experiences this brings in life.

In my free time, I can be found drinking a cup of coffee, reading too many books at once, or trail running through one of Maryland’s glorious state parks.
